Customer sites that have installed our innovative Energy and Emission Management (E2M®) predictive analytics platform, have the luxury of predicting peaks, enrolling in Demand Side Management (‘DSM’) programmes, Demand Response and a host of other systems to reduce their network charges.

Demand-Side Management

There are three areas of focus when looking to improve demand-side energy management. These include:

  • Improving Energy Efficiency for steady state load minimisation
  • Daily Peak Load Management for daily operations
  • Automated Demand Side Management (A-DSM) for event-driven dynamic peak load reduction

Energy Efficiency Control (EEC)

Energy efficiency and conservation can lower energy use to provide the same level of service. Driven by the desire for utility bill savings and environmental protection, EEC can permanently reduce peak load by reducing overall consumption. This is typically implemented by installing energy efficient equipment and facilitating efficient operations. Metro Power uses dynamic energy intensity modeling to apply and test plant optimisation every 15 minutes. This system is used to effortlessly identify asset faults, efficiency opportunities and product quality anomalies.

Daily Peak Load Management (PEM)

Daily Peak Load Management is the practice of operating a facility to reduce time-of-use during peak or high cost demand charges influenced by WEM or Spot / Balancing price. Typical peak load management methods include demand shedding, limiting, shifting and supply substitution (emergency generators).

Demand Limiting

Demand limiting refers to preventing ‘further start-ups’ when pre-determined peak demand limits are about to be exceeded. Normal load operations are restored when the demand is sufficiently reduced for the required period. This is typically implemented to flatten the load shape when the pre-determined peak is nominated.

Demand Shifting

Demand shifting is shifting the loads from peak times to off-peak periods. While not always the case, notification requirements, workforce considerations, and supplier schedules often result in load shifts at industrial facilities occurring later, rather than earlier, in a 24-hour period. Metro Power prefers to implement Demand Shift techniques in production-oriented facilities (such as Heavy Industrial & Mining Processes) to ensure (net) production targets are maintained.

Demand Shedding

Demand shedding is the dynamic temporary reduction, or curtailment of peak load through building services or process load changes. Where standby generation or air compressors are available, they may also be utilised to substitute the supply of grid-electricity by other means.
